Update from the Mouse Pad!

Hello All,

In spite of the surprise snow days we had this month, we still accomplished many lessons in the computer lab. Just a reminder that when we do have those unexpected snow days, this will be a great time to have your child practice those typing skills.

Kindergartners are supplementing what they have learned about the senses in their homeroom classes and using a program in the lab to reinforce those lessons taught. They are using All About Senses and are working on nine lessons of activities and once completed they get a wonderful certificate showing what an expert they are! The program involves lots of mouse clicking, patience, and reading directions!

First Graders are getting acquainted with the MS Paint program and using their creativity to create fabulous works of art. They are using all of the tools such as magnifying, spray painting, shapes, text and fill bucket just to name a few.

Second Graders all completed their slide show and had a ball presenting them on the smart board. I personally think they had more fun just being able to tap the smart board! They also have gotten a further introduction to programming with a program called Alice. They love it. It's a bit different than the programming they did last year involving a turtle. Alice lets them use any kind of object and allows them to create movements in 3D. When the students created these steps for their objects to move, they were amazed to learn that they just created a program! We definitely have some software developers in the making!

Third Graders completed their 'All About Me' Power Point presentations. They now are pretty confident in using the various tools that the program has to offer. Students were then introduced to Google Earth. They had a ball finding their school, home, and flying to any country they desired. They had made use of the wonderful tools such as 3D viewer. They especially loved traveling to India and viewing the Taj Mahal in 3D. They also traveled to space and located constellations. They went to the moon and established a 'mark' just in their name. Ask them about it!

Fourth Graders are working on comic strips using a creative program called Comic Life. They are incorporating their digital photos from Writer's Workshop and creating a comical strip. They have learned how to upload and download pictures. In the strips, they are resizing and adding such hilarious and colorful speech bubbles.

Fifth Graders are busy with picnik for editing their digital picture. It's a great, simple but an ingenious application that lets you edit your photo. Students had a blast adding items, cropping, adding color effects and removing blemishes. I think that tool was the favorite among the 5th Graders!! One student remarked, 'I always wanted to get rid of that dot on my nose'! It's a free app and ask your child to show you how it works.

As usual, please do let me know if you have any questions. Take care.

Update from the Mouse Pad!!

Hello,

As usual we are keeping very busy in the pad!

Kindergartners were introduced to a website to help enhance their mouse clicking. Please click on the left link, Talking Pets,  to see and have them show you what they have learned. Students enjoyed picking their pet, choosing backgrounds and dressing them up. We've got some great designers in here!

First Graders were busy with a little typing practice with TTL4 and the Talking Pets link. They took this site one step further and typed in simple sentences for their pets to say. You can just imagine the kinds of sentences they came up with. They loved hearing the animals say what they typed. Please have your First Grader show you!

Second Graders were busy with a little typing from TTL4 as well as bringing together their pictures from KidPix into their very own slide show. Students have been sharing their finished products through their very own presentation using the smart board! They love that magic board.

Third Graders have been busy learning about Power Point and are working on a presentation 'All About Me'. They are using many of the features such as slide transitions, animation, sound, importing pictures and design layout. Many students have taken this skill further and have made Power Points at home on various subjects such as Halloween, NFL, and Lego creations! I love when they take their knowledge outside the box!

Fourth Graders are busy wrapping up their Power Point presentations on an element from the periodic table. This came about from their science unit of Mixtures and Solutions. Ms. Scott requested that they research an element and present it's properties. They are incorporating all of their research into a colorful Power Point Presentation. Students have been researching in the lab using databases such as Nettrekker, Worldbook Online, and various other approved websites and documenting those resources. This lead to a discussion of 'why can't we just Google'. This in turn lead to a demonstration of safe, legal and ethical internet practices.

Fifth Graders solidified their math skills on the order of operations using our very popular How the West was 1+3*4 software. Many faced the challenge using negative numbers! Ask them about this. They also got introduced with creating mathematical formulas using Excel. They learned the basics of columns, rows, charting and deriving formulas. They completed a Halloween activity using Excel and finding out if Vampires really exist. They derived a formula and used the autofill to see the magic. They compared the number of vampires to the human population using the census website. Ask them if vampires really do exist! This was a great lesson on exponential growth. Concepts being taught currently in their math classes.

Digital photos were also taken of each Fifth Grader and placed on their server folders. Students will be manipulating their image using a pretty nifty app called picnik. Stay tuned for that. The link is at the left if you would like to preview it.

Grades 3-5 are required to keep a typing log each week and signed by a parent/guardian. Please help your child to keep those logs coming in.

Please contact me anytime you may have questions.

Update from the Lab!

Hello All,

As usual we are keeping very busy. Grades 1-5 have been using our TTL4 program to practice typing. For Grades 3 - 5, please have your child bring in their typing homework each week. There is a required 40 minute per week homework. Kindergartners were introduced to the Type to Learn Jr. program. As the year progresses, I will introduce TTL4 to them.

With the intro to keyboarding skills, Kindergartners have also created beautiful works of art using our KidPix Deluxe 4 program.

1st Graders created digital self-portraits which are currently displayed in the lab. Come by and take a peek.

2nd Graders have created pictures about themselves and are in the process of incorporating them into their very own slide show which they will then present to the class.

3rd Graders have learned the art of a book publishing software called EasyBook Deluxe and can create beautiful illustrations as well as a captivating story.

4th Graders completed their 3D digital models using SketchUp. There are certainly some budding architectural engineers in the making.

5th Graders used the advanced tools of SketchUp to create dream homes. In addition to this, they also played a math simulation game that enforced their knowledge of the order of operations. Remember PEMDAS?

I look forward to those who signed up for a conference with me. For those who did not, please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns.

What's up in the Lab!

Hello,

We continue to be very busy here in the lab with typing and introducing new projects at the various grade levels. Here's what's happening:

Kindergartners are eagerly learning the hand and figure control with the mouse. They have learned what it takes to open up an icon. I introduced Kid Pix which is a wonderful art software that lets you create beautiful images. They are learning many tools which include, the paint, crayon, stamps, importing backgrounds, and creating their own stamps.

First Graders are using Kid Pix to create a self portrait. They are getting familiar with the more advanced tools. I'm constantly amazed by how much they remember from their Kindergarten year. They were totally ready for the more challenging options. They have all logged on to the TTL4 program and continue to practice in the lab.

Second Graders are using Kid Pix on another level by creating their own slide show. They are creating up to 10 pictures that explain who they are and will then create a slide show to present with their peers using our lab smart board! They can't wait for that!

Third Graders were introduced to our new book publishing software. They are currently becoming authors and illustrators using this creative software. They are exploring with the various art tools as well as editing/revising tools that the software allows. We really do have some budding authors in the making. They are also continuing with typing practice using TTL4.

Fourth Graders had a valuable lesson on file management and creating folders on the student server. They know the importance of being organized on the computer just as they are in their classroom binders! They were also introduced to Sketchup which is a 3D architectural program that allows them to create beautiful 3D structures. Ask them about the various tools of the program. They are also practicing with the TTL4 program.

Fifth Graders are using the more advanced features of Sketchup to create their virtual 3D Dream Homes. These students can get very creative in what they want in their homes! These students were also introduced to our timeline software. They are going to create timelines from their Language Arts project. Fifth Graders continue to practice typing using TTL4.

NOTE: All 3 - 5 Graders were introduced to the typing homework that will be due each week. They are required to type 10 minutes for 4 days with a total of 40 minutes a week. This can be done in any way they find time. With busy schedules during the week, they can do their practice over the weekend. Their typing logs will need to be signed by a parent and turned in each week when they visit the lab. Thanks so much for your support on this.

The school typing program can be downloaded free of charge and I highly recommend that you do, so that typing progress can be tracked from home and school. The instructions for download can be found on your child's teacher's website.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Rasha Sachdeva

Have a Wonderful Summer!

Hello Parents,

For those of you who are leaving for other adventures next year, thanks for a wonderful year and have a great summer!

For those of you who are returning, I will keep typing accounts active so this will be a great time for your child to practice their typing skills. I strongly urge you to download the TTL4 so that I can keep a WPM count on your child. The directions can be found in the documents section of your child's teacher's website. If not, please email me for a copy. The benchmark for 5th graders is 30 WPM. Keep that number in mind as you see their WPM in whatever typing program you are using. Again I stress to use TTL4 so that I can keep a continuing record of their WPM.

Have a wonderful summer and I'll see you next year!

Final Days!

Hello Families,

I can't believe the school year is almost over. I've had a wonderful year and it was such a pleasure teaching each child.

I wanted to remind you all if you have not downloaded the TTL4 typing program, please do. The school purchased the program for you so that your child may continue their typing practice at home. If your child is returning next year, their account will remain active through the summer so that they can continue their practice by the pool! If you need directions to download, please email me or see your child's teacher's website for instructions.

This month grades have started new projects and are continuing to wrap up others.

Our Kindergartners have been busy experimenting with the SmartBoard and have been exploring the MS Paint program along with typing practice using Type to Learn Jr. I found that many Kindergartners were not ready for the TTL4 program as it requires longer concentration on various activities. Nevertheless, the program is available for them and some have started using it rather than the Jr. program.

First graders have been getting familiar with Kidspiration to help them organize their thoughts and ideas in a more visual manner. They are currently creating webs that describe who they are. It's fascinating to see their creativity come alive with this program. All First graders are using the TTL4 typing program. Again many of them have taken advantage of the download and are typing at home as well.

Second graders are continuing with their web designing and are completing several pages already on their chosen topics. They love to explore with the various tools and to experiment with the link button.

Third graders are completing the SimSafari program and many have already gotten to the 5 stars and have successfully created a profitable business. Ask your child how far they have gotten. For those who have not yet gotten the 5 stars, nevertheless are enjoying the challenge and learning quite a lot from the process.

Fourth graders have completed blue prints of their website and have started designing the pages and getting very familiar with the hyperlink editor. Please note that the websites they create will not be 'published' on the internet. The sites are just for the classroom only and for their peers to see. The students here have really taken off with the TTL4 program. Many Fourth graders are already typing at the 6th grade level. Again these are the students who have downloaded the program and are getting that extra practice at home.

Fifth graders are continuing with the Crazy Machines science software. The students are really taking off with the various experiments, some very challenging, and are learning to help one another get over hurdles. I love to see team work! In the next week or so we will be discussing the topic of netiquette rules. With the increased online activity, students should be aware of certain rules because how and when they write can convey a lot about themselves.

As usual if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Take care,
Rasha Sachdeva

Lab Update with Typing Info!

Hello,

I wanted to make sure you knew that I will be keeping all typing accounts active through the summer for those continuing at OWS or Vista. The summer will be a great opportunity to finish the current grade level typing so that when they arrive back, they will be starting with their new grade level. If in the summer, your child finished the level (all 34 lessons), please send me an email and I can make the change then to their new grade level.

Those of you who have not yet downloaded the typing program, I strongly encourage you so that your child can use a consistent program at school and at home to track their goals and accuracy. The directions can be found on your child's teacher's website.

K-5 have been busy as usual here in the lab.

Fourth and Fifth graders got a refresher course on how to manage their files on the server. Keeping folders organized on the computer is just as important as keeping them organized in their physical binder!

Fifth graders are delving into a science software which supplements what they have learned in their science unit. The software lets them solve and create experiments involving rotation of gears, pushing levers and using pulleys. There are over 100 experiments that they need to solve plus 200 challenge ones! You should see them go at it in the lab. It's like a room full of scientists!

Fourth graders are busy with their step by step process of designing their own web page. They have just completed their blue print and are ready to start designing. They each came up with great topics.

Third graders were introduced to what a simulation software is and how one works. They are currently working on a sim that involves running a successful safari. They need to make important decisions on what animals they need, how to set up a camp for tourist and how to hire local villagers to help run the safari. They started with a specific budget and must use that to create their business. It's always amazing to see how they spend their money!

Second graders are continuing with their web page designing as well. They have completed their home and author pages and are adding more detailed pages about their topic. My Second graders alternate between this web project and typing lessons.

First graders are learning Kidspiration software. They are currently working on pre-selected activities such as dragging symbols to matching letters and shapes. They are also learning about the various tools the program has to offer such as symbols, shapes, texting and recording.

Kindergartners are busy making beautiful art work using the MS Paint program. They have learned to use pencils, paintbrushes, fill bucket, spray paint, change colors, erase and adding text. They are currently using the program to create a family portrait.

As usual, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to stop by or email. Take care.

Lab Update!

Hello Everyone,

March has just flown by and Spring Break is already here! I want to wish you all a very fun and safe Spring Break and hope you get the much deserved rest with family.

Kindergartners and First Graders have been getting acquainted with my new Smart Board. I love it. The kids are so fascinating by it and now know why they call it SmartBoard Technology! Students got to see an interactive story and they got to click to turn the pages. They also created great artwork as a group and individually. They loved the use of the 'magic' pens and eraser. They got to drag and drop icons with their fingers!

My Second Graders have also used the Smart Board as well. They were very intrigued by the scrolling function and the fact that whatever is on my laptop, shows on the SmartBoard. They have also started web designing. We are using a wonderful software that teaches them the basics of web designing without the use of HTML. They have already created home and author pages.

Third Graders have just completed using Inspiration graphic organizer to map out their inventors that they learned about in their homeroom classes. This is a great tool to visually see your research and have it all come together in a visual representation. Ask them about it!

My Fourth Graders have been busy with a mathematical simulation involving a 'Hot Dog Stand'. It's an entertaining simulation that presents students with the challenge of running their own small business. In the process, students strengthen a variety of mathematics, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Fifth Graders are having a ball with Photoshop. This month they learned to merge their picture with a peers (with permission, of course) and created a new person! I'm always so amazed with how fast they learn and how they love to just dig in without hesitation. We also set time this month for their American History simulation. There are 3 levels to pass and most are on the final.

All students are continuing to get in some time for typing practice in the lab. For those who have not downloaded the program, I strongly suggest that you do as it is a wonderful program that keeps track of student progress. It is also web based so what they do here is saved and can continue on at home and vice versa. Instructions for download can be found on your child's teacher's website.

What's Happening in the Lab!

Hello All,

There is an interesting documentary on online multi-tasking that was shown on PBS called Digital Nation. I found it extremely fascinating and surprising. Please view the online video on the left at your leisure.

K- 5 graders have been busy bees in the lab. Our Kindergartners and 1st graders have been using Reader Rabbit 1 and 2 to hone their phonic awareness.

2nd graders are using our new Web Workshop to create their own web pages. Please note that these will not be linked to the internet, only the process of web designing is stressed.

3rd graders are using our visual representation software to create maps on their important person they have been studying about in their homeroom classes. They are also using Nettrekker for further research.

4th graders are using a simulation software to learn about creating a business and being successful at it. Math skills come in real handy with software. Ask them about their hot dog stand!

5th graders are delving into the many tools that Photoshop offers. They recently learned how to merge two photos into one. They used, with permission, their peer's photo and took certain facial features of theirs and merged it onto theirs. They had a total blast doing this. Some remarked how easy is was to alter photos and it looks so real!

As usual, TTL4 is being used for typing practice but please note that due to introducing lessons, your child may not practice in the lab on their day so it is really important that my 3-5 graders are getting practice outside of school. If you have not downloaded the TTL4 program, please do so. If you have issues with downloading this, then please have your child practice with some other program that keeps track of their goals. The download instructions should be posted on your child's classroom website. Because this blog is Public, I cannot post the instructions to download as it had ID information.

Take care and send me an email if you have any questions or concerns.

Update in the Lab!

Hello,

In the past two weeks, K-5 have been budding technologists! Kindergartners and 1st graders are exploring the age appropriate software in the lab along with our new typing program. Second graders are using the Kidspriration software to map a visual diagram all about themselves. Third graders are using a more in depth version of Kidspiration called Inspiration and are creating visual diagrams on the person or inventor they have studied in their homeroom class. Fourth graders are continuing to have dialogs on our wikispace. They are also posting comments on the Inquiry blogs set up by their teachers. If you haven't been on the blogs, please ask your child about it and feel free to comment on any inquiry project that you may have info on. The 4th graders also completed a visual diagram of their inquiry projects. This was to help them see what they have and what they need to get all in one snapshot. Please look at those when you get a chance. Fifth graders are getting familiar with photoshop. This week they learned more about using various layers and backgrounds. They are also continuing with typing practice.

I strongly suggest especially for 3-5 graders, that they should have some typing program at home to practice if not TTL4. I can really notice the difference between those who practice outside of the lab and those who do not. Please also keep in mind that due to other planned projects in the lab, we may not practice typing in class. So having some sort of practice at home is beneficial.

This week I saw 6-8 graders and got them familiar with the typing program as well. Keep in mind that TTL4 goes all the way to 12th grade levels. It's just as important for middle school students to practice as it is for 3 -5 graders. The Vista students have TTL4 on their school laptops. They can also download it onto their home computer from the website. Please see Tim Costello for directions.

As usual, contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Have a wonderful mid-winter break!!!

Regards,
Rasha Sachdeva

Lab Update!

Hello All,

As usual we have been quite busy here in the lab. K-5 grades are getting very acquainted with our new typing program, the web version of Type to Learn 4. I encourage you to please have your child continue to practice at home. Weekly visits to the lab are just not enough time for sufficient practice especially for grades 3-5.

Fifth graders are getting their first introduction to photoshop. They are learning the basics of manipulating a photo by cropping, lightening, resizing, and adding proper effects.

Fourth graders are enjoying their new social networking tool, our very own wikispace. Students are learning to use the space wisely for a discussion board on topics such as favorite games (digital and board), book reviews and current events.

Third graders are continuing with their Scratch projects and will be ready to share their animation to their group this week. I can't wait to see their creations come to life!

Second graders have wrapped up their lessons on programming using Microworld's Jr and are now learning how to create character webs using our Kidspiration software. They are choosing their favorite characters and describing them as well as giving examples and it is all being digitally mapped out with graphics and all.

First graders are honing their mapping skills by using our Neighborhood Map Machine software. They are creating beautiful maps incorporating a compass, key, buildings, streets, and much more. Soon they will have a chance to have their classmate use their geographic skills to find a secret place on their map and vise versa.

Kindergartners are getting comfortable with the keyboard, mouse clicking and navigating through our educational Sunburst software about senses, plants and animals. They go through nine levels of prompts and once completed, are rewarded with certificates. Look for those as your child completes the levels.

As usual if you have any questions or comments, please pop me an email or stop by.

Take care,
Rasha Sachdeva

Happy 2010 Everyone!

We've been busy getting acquainted with our new web version typing program. Many students have taken advantage of the free download program and are continuing with their progress at home. Please don't feel compelled to download the software. It is optional but I do strongly suggest having your child do some form of typing practice at home. The key goal is to reach 30 WPM by the time they reach 5th grade. Strong typing skills will help them tremendously in higher education as the homework load and assignments increase.

Next week I will introduce new tools to our 4th and 5th graders and my K-3 grades will continue delving into the various applications established in the lab!

Have a wonderful week!
